KANT IN ASIA: INTUITION, EAST, AND WEST

Thanks to all who have submitted abstracts for the second Kant in Asia conference. A list of confirmed participants, their paper titles, and abstracts can be found on the conference website, at http://staffweb.hkbu.edu.hk/ppp/KantInAsia2/schedule.htm. There are still places open places for a few more papers, so if you are interested in attending this event please consider submitting a 100-200 word abstract for a paper suitable for a 30-minute presentation (including discussion time). A primary objective of this conference is to increase mutual awareness and encourage closer interaction between Asian and Western interpreters/interpretations of Kant. English will be the main language, but papers of exceptional relevance may be presented in German or Chinese. To enhance cross-cultural interaction, we aim to provide simultaneous translation into English in such cases.

Submitted abstracts will be reviewed, with priority given to topics directly relevant to the main theme and/or topics dealing with any aspect of the relation between Kant and Chinese (or other Asian) philosophies. Topics directly relevant to the main theme include (but are not limited to): historical influences on Kant’s view of intuition; the influence of Kant’s theory of intuition on subsequent thinkers; the status of space and time as pure intuitions; the nature and meaning of “inner intuition”; the role of intuition in Kant’s theory of knowable objects; the function of empirical intuition(s); the role of intuition in mathematics, practical philosophy, or aesthetics; the status of intellectual intuition and its role in Kant’s theology; the contrast between Kantian intuition and the way references to “intuition(s)” function in contemporary analytic philosophy. Priority will be given to topics that are not yet represented by the existing papers. Decisions on this second round of submitted abstracts will be made within two weeks of the deadline, and participants will be notified of the result on or before 15 October 2016.

Participants will be expected to confirm their place by paying the conference fee of US$150 (=HKD1170) on or before 15 November 2016. This fee includes the cost of all conference materials, refreshments during breaks, at least four conference meals, and a cultural event, but not travel or accommodation. (Details on the conference hotel will be announced on the conference website in due course.) Full time students and unemployed participants are eligible for a discounted early registration fee of US$75 (=HKD585). A small number of travel subsidies may be made available to participants coming from less privileged countries, who would otherwise not be able to attend.
