Eastern Study Group

About the Study Group

The Eastern Study Group of the North American Kant Society was founded in 2004 by Sharon Anderson-Gold with the aim of promoting discussion of Kantian scholarship among students and faculty on the east coast. Our annual meetings are usually held in the spring and take place at colleges and universities from Maine to Washington, DC. Meetings feature invited speakers and papers selected through blind review by ENAKS committee members. The best graduate student paper at each conference receives a stipend of $200 and is nominated for the the Markus Herz Award. Meetings are open to the public. Students and faculty are warmly invited to join in friendly and rigorous discussion. For more information, visit our website.

Host: Krista Thomason

Keynotes: Karen Stohr (Georgetown University) and Janum Sethi (University of Michigan)

Submission deadline: July 25, 2025

Notification: around August 29, 2025

The Eastern Study Group of NAKS invites submissions for detailed abstracts (1,000-1,200 words) for its 2025 annual meeting, to take place at Swarthmore College, in Swarthmore, PA, outside of Philadelphia. Submissions (in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format) should be prepared for anonymous review and include a word count. Please supply author name, affiliation, and contact information in a separate file. Graduate students should note their status in the contact information.

Please send all abstracts electronically to Krista Thomason, kthomas2@swarthmore.edu.

The selection committee welcomes contributions on all topics of Kantian scholarship (both contemporary and historically-oriented), including discussions of Kant’s immediate predecessors and successors. We especially encourage submissions from individuals of groups underrepresented in philosophy and Kant scholarship in particular.

The best graduate student paper will receive a $300 stipend and be eligible for the Markus Herz Prize awarded by NAKS. Papers already presented at other NAKS study groups or meetings are not eligible for submission. Presenters must be members of NAKS in good standing at the time of submission.
